Demonstrate Restraint

Yasmeen Godder (Tel Aviv - Jaffa)

18 – 19 May 2019 | Potsdamer Tanztage 2019Dance / performance

Israeli choreographer Yasmeen Godder returns to the stage herself with Demonstrate Restraint. Together with the musician, vocalist and composer Tomer Damsky, she embodies and deconstructs images, concepts, sounds and symbols from the political context of Israel. The focus is on the desire to be explicitly political. At the same time, she recognizes the impossibility of this - a field of tension, as the title suggests. For Yasmeen Godder, two aspects stand opposite each other: the desire to protest at the top of one's voice and to commit oneself with all one's might on the one hand and one's own restraint and doubts about what can be said on the other. With dance, music and singing, the duo creates a powerful play between loud protest and moments in which they are silenced or fall silent themselves. As women and performers on stage, they develop tactics to penetrate highly charged to explosive themes.
Yasmeen Godder won the renowned Bessie Award in 2001, followed by numerous other international awards. At the festival Potsdamer Tanztage she already presented her highly acclaimed pieces Common Emotions and Simple Action.
