Re:INCARNATION

Qudus Onikeku / The QDance Company (Lagos)

14 – 15 May 2022 | Potsdamer Tanztage 2022Dance / performance

Street atmosphere, parties, conflicts, costumes, rhythms… Re:INCARNATION is an exuberant mirror of Lagos youth culture, deeply influenced by urban dances such as afro-beats, dancehall, hip-hop, and funky house. Dressed in vivid colours, a dozen dancers reveal an exuberant exploration of the life stages through various tableaux – from birth through death to rebirth. Finding its origins in the Yoruba philosophy, ethnic origins of Nigerian choreographer Qudus Onikeku, these cycles bring back to life the body memory and celebrate Africa’s ability to renew itself in a collective rebirth. This piece is characterised by a strong musical presence with mystical sounds but also by great silences and chants, all of which create a unique atmosphere. It invites one to follow an emotionally charged path between great joys and sorrows. A surprising piece, rich in traditions and modernity!
