JazzLab – A move a breath

Laura Gary, Yuko Matsuyama, Nicolas Schulze

06 Oct 2023 | JazzLab 2023Concerts / Performances

In October, dance is the focus of JazzLab. The Brandenburg dancer and choreographer Laura Gary and the Berlin musician and performer Yuko Matsuyama are invited. Together with Nicolas Schulze, the artists will improvisationally explore the question of what sounds a moving body produces. What role do breath and silence play? How do body and instrument influence each other, who sets the impulse, who moves whom?

Since 2013, Potsdam jazz pianist Nicolas Schulze has organised the JazzLab concert and improvisation series in cooperation with fabrik Potsdam. Originally intended as a pure jazz concert format, JazzLab has since developed into a colourful, interdisciplinary format. In JazzLab, music, dance and performative art come together. All genres are united through the language of improvisation. Each evening is themed and consists of two parts: first invited guests perform a concert set, then the stage is opened to the audience. The Open Stage is an important element of JazzLab. Here professionals and amateurs meet and in the joint improvisation a new language emerges. It's about communication, listening, exchange and encounter!
JazzLab offers an important stage for the Brandenburg scene. The format has also developed into a performance venue for international artists. The cooperation between JazzLab and international residencies at fabrik Potsdam is also important here.
JazzLab celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2023, making it one of the most enduring cultural offerings in the field of jazz, improvised music and performance in Potsdam.
