The Acogny technique is an African contemporary dance technique that synthesizes traditional African dances and Western dance techniques. It was conceived by dancer Germaine Acogny, the “mother of African contemporary dance”. Joy, play, rhythm and the connection between human beings and nature are the philosophical foundations of this technique. The class is focussed on the work of the spine, repetition and grounding, lines and alignment of the body. In this dance one finds the freedom to express oneself through the body. Aïda Colmenero Dïaz is teacher at Ecole des Sables in Senegal and encouraged the development of contemporary dance in Africa.
