In "Treasured in the Dark", the first part of his trilogy "Choreoversations“, Thiago Granato refers to the late choreographers Tatsumi Hijikata (Japan / 1928-1986) and Lennie Dale (USA-Brazil / 1934-1994) in a wonderful series of metamorphoses using the darkness of Butho and tropical Brazilian modern jazz. The choreography is characterised by an extreme ability to shift and the dancer’s exceptional virtuosity. It also asks questions about dance as a political statement and as a place of resistance - because in post-war Japan and the military dictatorship of Brazil (1965-1985) Butho and queer dance theatre cabaret were per se political expressions. In this piece the metamorphosis of the body becomes a political subversion, which is equally necessary today and places the mirror in our own hands.
