Opening program of Potsdamer Tanztage
Canada Focus 2017
The Canadian choreographer Marie Chouinard takes the audience to a world of paradisiacal harmony, hellish madness and frivolous gaiety. She puts the famous triptych "The Garden of Delights" by Hieronymus Bosch, which consists of Garden Eden, Hell and Paradise, under a magnifying glass and shows what can happen when a painting begins to dance. Characters’ poses give movement impulses and produce an extraordinary choreography that pays tribute to a masterpiece of the Middle Ages and at the same time acts as a bridge between fine arts and dance.
Just as a choreographer can start with a piece of music in order to create, I am starting with the painting by Bosch. And just as a choreographer can choose to "stick" to a musical score (or not), I have chosen to "stick" to Bosch´s painting, its spirit.
The joy of bowing before a masterpiece!
